Of the over 6.9 million children who die every year before they reach their fifth birthday, 2.6 million of them die due to malnutrition and hunger. Simple math tells us that is 7,100 little ones dying each day because they couldn't get enough food to sustain them. Read more. Click

 Homeless Kids Deserve an Education
Homeless kids are deserving of an education just as much as any child, anywhere. It's their right. And so says the
McKinney-Venuto Act of 1987. But many complications get in the way of that. Homeless families who seek shelter in motels and on the couches of familiy and friends may be disqualified from obtaining subsidized housing according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development unless certain documentation can be provided which may be difficult for these families. Those families in even more dire conditions living on the street or in their cars, face further problems.

Housing for Homeless Families

Considered a low estimate, the most recent statistics from the Federal government identifies over 1 million homeless children at the close of 2011. 1,065,794  homeless children were enrolled in school. ( 13% increase from the previous year and a 57% increase from 2007 when America's recession began.) HUD recognizes about 30% of these children as homeless. A present bill in Congress would identify all homeless children (any child who does not have a legal residence), as homeless, but HUD worries that as those numbers climb and funds do not increase, there would be less money to give to those families living on the street, in their cars, or in abandoned buildings.

The Statistics are Staggering and They Are Getting Worse
Each year
, one in 50 of America's children go to sleep without a home. That's over 1.5 million. (
Families with children comprise 34% of the homeless population and within a single year, 97% of homeless children have moved, with at least 25% witnessing violence, and 22% being separated from their families. This relates to anxiety, depression. They have trouble learning and have undue challenges in school. 20% of homeless preschoolers have emotional problems due to their homelessness.(
In New YorkCity
, said to be the richest city in America, 20,000 children now live in shelters. 10/6/2012 (
12 to 24 million children live on the streets of Brazil. (
Millions of children are being left to raise themselves in subsaharan Africa as the HIV/Aids epidemic has taken the lives of their parents. (
Nearly 2 million children live on the streets of Mexico City. (
75,000 children live in the garbage dumps and streets of Manila. (
40,000 prostitutes under 14 live on the streets of Thailand. (
42% of homeless children are under the age of six. 902,108 homeless children are enrolled in school with 77.3% in grades K-8 and 22.7% in grades 9-12. (
Less than 1 in 4 homeless children graduates
from high school. Approximately, 1,166,520 of today's homeless children will not be high school graduates and lose over  a total of $230 billion in lifetime earnings.(
More than one in seven homeless children
are reported to have moderate to svere health conditions, including asthma - 1 in 7 children; traumatic stress - 1 in 18 live in homes where adults hit and throw things; emotional disturbance - 1 in 6 suffer.(
Living situations include: doubled up-56%, shelters-24%, hotels/motels-7%, unsheltered-3%, unknown/other-10% (
